burrito update!

Burrito, about 4 weeks old (he was too sick earlier for me to take photos)

Burrito, around 9 weeks old
(today!)

Remember baby burrito who had such a rough start in life? Well, here’s a short update! I got him in around 3 weeks old and on death’s door and now look at him! Aside from the two mysterious bald patches on his nose, he’s growing up really well! He can chew on nuts, barely eats formula anymore and is almost 9 weeks old now:-) He’s learning to be afraid of me which is sad for me, but a really good thing!

Burrito is now in his large cage, learning how to be squirrely outdoors!

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find any litter mates for him (yet) so I might have to release him in my backyard so that he can have a home for a while if he needs one:-)

your cute for the day - squirrel rescue baby

The story of Burrito:

Burrito was found near the bottom of a tree. He had been outside without any sign of mom for about 2 days! Apparently he was whining but neighbors thought it was a dog making that noise. Then on the second day a guy went out looking for the noise source and found him lying there all alone:-(

When I got him he was in REALLY bad shape. He had a horrid amount of fleas all over his body (ick!), he was skin and bones, dehydrated and his heart was beating super duper fast. I honestly didn’t think he’d make it!

I stayed up all night feeding him pedialyte (it’s like gatoraide for babies;-) and keeping him warm. Everytime I went out to feed him I assumed he’d be dead but he was still fighting. The next day he was still alive!

Now it’s been about a week and his eyes opened two days ago! He’s full of energy and doing really well–not a flea on him! He’s a little over 4 weeks old (in case anyone was wondering).

I wanted to take pics when his eyes were closed but he was just so sick I didn’t want to stress him out.

Burrito isn’t really his name or anything– i just call him that because I roll him up in blankets to feed him and he looks like a little burrito when I do that:-)

This baby’s been a tad sick so I have him in a cage by himself so he can get some peace and quiet–cute right?

Guests : This baby is not a pet - he will be released into the wild when he’s older;-)

Animal Rescue Update - 2nd Batch!

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

My first batch of 3 went to another rehabber (they were getting old enough to be put outdoors;-)

Yesterday I got one single all by himself and he was lonely and scared. He growled at me and couldn’t figure out the bottle! Then today I got two more who are a little younger (now I have a large, medium and tiny!). This made the lonely one a lot more friendly and playful–cute! Now they are all drinking from the bottle and eating applesauce with baby cereal (what a mess!) They pretty much walk in it;-)

This little guy is really funny- i admit I’m pretty attached to him;-) He came in with brain issues (maybe he fell from a tree or something) and couldn’t do anything but walk in circles–he couldn’t aim at all! He was given to me to just take care of him in hopes that he’ll get well enough to be released into the wild.

He’s gotten a lot better! Now he can climb all three levels of the cage and walk straight (believe me, it was hard for him!) ;-) He still gets the “spinnies” but with some time and luck, he’ll be able to go off into the world!

The End.

Squirrel Rescue Update!

Toby propping the release cage on top of the garage

(close up of them flyin’ around the cage freaking out about their new surroundings;-)

A minute before we opened the doors

We finally released the squirrels into our backyard last week! We put the cage up on the roof with a piece of wood reaching to a tree so that they could run onto it and escape.

It seemed like a great idea at the time but when we opened the doors to let them leave, they just flew out in all directions (over the roof, down the garage walls, etc) and ignored the 2×4 completely! It took them a while to really leave and find a comfy place to live but now they are all gone, learning how to be real grown-up squirrels. We see them every so often running down a tree:-)

I tried to get a pic of them free but man, they are tiny and FAST!

Squirrel Rescue Update–release time!

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Great news!

I’ve been approved for releasing squirrels in my yard!! This means that I don’t have to give them to someone else to release and that I get to try it for the first time ever. Not only that but it’s nice to raise the babies and then know they’ll be around your very own neighborhood:-)

Ooooh, it’s awesome news for me–I’m going to try and release them this weekend! (that means I’ll get a new batch soon too:-)

I’d post pics but they are all grown up and basically terrified of me!

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Hi guys!

I just got a new batch of baby raccoons for rehab:-) The one in the photos is about 4 weeks old and the other two I have still have their eyes closed so they are about 3 weeks and so cute!! I’ll photograph them later for you if I get the chance.

Here’s the little girl outside for the first time:

She’s like “argh, photo time? Must we?”

Toddler walk!

(in this one she’s sayin’ “I’m ready to go back in people!!” )

Squirrel Rescue Update

My squirrels are all grown up and doing great!

Remember this guy? Now he looks like this:

They are all really hard to take photos of (except for this guy because he LOVES when I feed him so he always comes out to great me) but I did my best!

3 baby raccoons

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Today I got a litter of 3 new baby raccoons! They are about 3 weeks old and are super cute.

The best part? Rey got her license too so we are going to do this batch together! It’ll be so nice to have company and they’ll have two mommies! (temporarily of course;-)

We’ll take pics later and post em’!
